Ophthalmic solutions

Ophthalmic solutions (solutions for cleaning and storing contact lenses, solutions for flushing used in eye surgery, eye treatment products) must satisfy the strictest requirements and specifications for the product.


The main component of most ophthalmic solutions is water (water for injection), as well as various ingredients (salts, such as sodium chloride, protective substances, various polymer substances).




Process Requirements


Filter elements must provide high flow rates.


Filters should not bind or adsorb the preservatives used in the production of the product.


Sterilizing filters should ensure reliable removal of microorganisms.


The final membrane filters should have a low level of extractable substances, do not release pyrogens, subject to the integrity test.


Prefilters and sterilizing filters must withstand repeated cycles of sterilization (line steam or autoclaving).


The filtration scheme for ophthalmic solutions usually includes a pre-filtration stage through a depth filter to reduce the amount of contaminants and a sterilizing filtration step using a 0.2 μm membrane filter.


In the absence of a pre-filter, the membrane is clogged quickly, resulting in a reduction in the throughput of the filter system. The use of a deep filter as a preliminary allows a much larger resource of the system. The coordinated combination of the final filter and prefilter provides the required flow rate and all process requirements.

Recommendations for filters Technofilter for the filtration process of ophthalmic solutions

 we recommend that for qualitative prefiltration that satisfies the requirements of the process, use deep prefilters based on  series microglass fibers EPVS with a rating of 0.5 μm. Filter elements are capable of providing high flow rates, excellent mechanical and thermal resistance, low resistance, high efficiency of microparticle retention, do not emit fibers into the filtrate, are manufactured according to ISO 9001: 2000.


For final filtration, we recommend a HYPERLINK sterilizing membrane filter  EPM-PS-045/020 based on a high-performance asymmetric polyethersulfone membrane with a pore size of 0.2 μm. This filter provides a low binding of preservatives at high flow rates and operating life.


For sterilizing air filtration ("breathing" filters), we recommend membrane filter elements made of HYPERLINK polytetrafluoroethylene EF.F4 with 0.2 μm pore size.


For the organization of the filtration process, we offer enclosure equipment - medical HYPERLINK  filter holders of the DS series from high-quality stainless steel AISI 316L or AISI 304 for different number and height of filter elements and filtration units on their basis.
